[NSRCA-discussion] Pattern Growth (was NSRCA Dues Increase)

I've tried to stay away from this thread but it's time to chime in with my
.02...Because of the distance I need to travel for Pattern I have taken an
interest in IMAC. I consider myself an entry level beginner type pilot. I
will fly both Pattern and IMAC this year (2006). OK...I'll make the contest
and try to fly...vbg
About Cost - Lisa and I went to an IMAC contest last year and entered Basic
with my 2M Focus. It's very interesting to see 25% plane or bigger for
Sportsman and up. Most I have seen flying Basic with interest spends more
than a typical Pattern Sportsman. I really don't see the cost of a
competitive plane being the issue. To me I would think that most flying in
the upper classes of IMAC are spending more than upper classes of a pattern
guy (gal). Further more, some fly both...
About Dues - I've read some squabbling about dues. I didn't give very much
time to it. I would be willing to bet that those having issues with a $10
increase have no problem paying over $1.00 for bottled water or a soda. Quit
frankly I'm not sure why or how less than .03 cents per day or less than .20
cents per week or .83 cents per month will cause any organization's
membership to decrease. We all probably loose more pocket change in the same
year.
Why is pattern dropping - As stated many times but in different words. It's
all about evolution of the sport. There are more areas in RC than 10 or 20
years ago. Interests change with each generation. The total market (AMA
members) probably hasn't grown that much. It would be interesting to compare
the NSRCA population Vs the AMA population and see how much we actually lost
as a percentage of membership.
For those that read this much...Food for thought...
Do e-mail threads like this one, which continue the banter, help or hurt
pattern?
It's good to bring up points or debate issues. But sometimes these things
seem to on forever.
Let's all relax and start some threads that most folks are really interested
in. How to help a newbie...
Give if you can, support when you can, and promote always !!!! Pattern will
hold it's own...
HAPPY New Year to all !!!!!!!!!!

Derek.
I believe the NSRCA should be looking at the last 10 years as the
measure to see how things are improving. Speaking in generalities this SIG
has been in declining status for most part since this sport has become
dramatically more expensive and takes gobs more time to be involved in. The
days of flying 40 size models are no longer viable. 60 size models are no
longer competitive. Competitors have to learn to be a competent judge as
well as a good mechanic / flyer and possibly builder if they choose to.
All these factors do force the realization that this sport is no longer
willing to encourage or listen to the causal competitor.
