[NSRCA-discussion] Electrics

After the first couple cycles, I was only getting 2.5-3 charges on
Interstate’s largest deep-discharge units. We did the math and that was
about right. They have ‘Economy’ batteries that are units that have been
turned back in, a little old, etc that they sell for very little. I got a
basically new one to add to the old and get enough charges for what I need.
Thought about a Honda generator—but with the new chargers—you have to go up
a notch or two for charging capacity. It’s always something.

I finally got off my butt to fix the Impact the tunnel-vision-challenged guy
ran into on the runway last year and screwed up the right wing and fuse.
Looks like it gained about 3.5 oz. total. It was a smidge over 11 lbs with
the 3200s b/4 the crash—what a disappointment--and now it’s just going to
be

well, not my number 1 for sure. I thought about asking him about
insurance, but since the thing was going to be way over with better
batteries, I just chalked it up

The only battery giving me a problem is the lead acid Marine 'deep
discharge' battery used for field charging of the lipos. It has lost about
70% of it's capacity in seven months.

It provided six 12min flts when new and was purchased from Academy Surplus
for $40. It has provided a total of maybe 80 flights ( 30 cycles ??? ). The
problem is likely due to my maintenance ( lack thereof ). I left the battery
in a partial discharge state sometmes for weeks. You can find maintenance
needs on Google at agmbatteries, courtesy Earl Haury.

West Mountain sells a gell cell, 54#, 84ah, rated for 500 cycles @ 100%
discharge ( 20hr discharge rate ), $149 del. I will see how it performs
under our conditions.
