I think the noise from the Bear props were due to the tips going supersonic, not the fact that they were counter-rotating.
   
  My son's Blade CX helicopter (with counter-rotating rotors) certainly is not loud. :-)

Thought I read somewhere that F-14 pilots "escorting" Russian Bear bombers 
could get nauseous from the noise those props generated.
