I'm running around in a 2002 GMC  HD 2500 Duramax Crew Cab 4X4 with the long bed.  20 mpg, and I can haul pretty much anything I want, plus carry four people.  With a canopy on the back, you could put as much stuff as you wanted.  It doesn't seem to matter how much pattern associated junk I throw in, or what speed I drive, the mileage is pretty much the same.
Now, if I could only find diesel for under $3.00 a gallon....
