Wow! Waxing such profound philosophy should qualify you to be Prez. of a club.

Eric:
I like to compare it to fishing. You could get a cane pole, some line, a hook, dig some worms.......head to the river. Or, you can get a $25k bass boat and everything in between. The point of the exercise remains........catch a fish.

Jim,
I compare it with golf, golf equipment, fees, belonging to a golf club and the practice needed. It's about the same.
Needs the same weather etc. but golf keeps the wife a lot happier !!!!!!

As a reality check, I sometimes compare pattern flying to off-road motorcycle racing, a sport that was readily availble to me considering the desert I grew up in. I've though that considering the simplest form of racing (ATV or even jetski), I couldn't break the competitve surface of those sports with the dollars I spend on pattern stuff.
Now - I saw a gentleman the other day that might get close. This guy has an AWESOME trailor and setup, etc. However, you would need that stuff for ATV racing anyway.
In this sense, pattern for the competitive guy, is a fairly inexpense for of getting the competition bug going.

Think the oil cans are high? Try a Gas Pump or other service station equipment from that era. AND then IF that’s not crazy want to look at some CARS?
Thank your lucky stars we do play with Model Airplanes.!
But then we could include WOMEN!—Naw let’s not go there.

Dwayne,
Sure we are!!!! You don't think spending thousands of dollars on pieces of balsa wood that sometimes get totally destroyed because of a slight error on our part (or a radio "glitch") is crazy? Well, I don't either but some people probably do. At least we're learning something. Some of that collecting obsession is a little extreme (who would have thought an oil can was worth that kind of money?). Wait a minute, my Father has a basement full of Lionel trains - he actually plays with them though ("runs them") so I guess he's not crazy either. Things that make you go hmmm...
