Jason,
            A lot depends upon what engine you are running. A front carb 
likes some space. A rear carb lets you go narrower near the spinner. 
Electric perhaps even narrower.

I have  more 3" spinners than 3.25" spinners, but prefer a 3.5".

What! you didn't expect a simple answer did you?  (VBG)
