Dan my valve cover gasket looked pretty worn out.  That may be a good idea.  By the way are you going to Columbia?

  Mike and I both have had the surging on idle with our 1.60's.  Tried all the usual suspects and ended up replacing the valve cover gasket and it solved the problem on both of them.
