The differences in the Z and the original...are...The Z has Zero down
thrust. You had to shim the nose ring molded into the fuse...2mm at the
bottom and zero at the top. I used a small piece of balsa and then sanded it
to the angle. The Z also has 1" was cut off the top of the rudder counter
balance. This is the extent of the changes I know about. The biggest
improvement is the thrust. If you are sticking servos in the tail for
elevators then put the wing where they say...Align the LE and TE dimples. On
some of the later kits the wing tube socket was moved in the wing cores and
the dimple marking the wing tube location is not quite correct. Back to wing
position...If you are planning elevator servos in the tail and its a glow
setup (YS DZ) leave the wing where its suppose to be. If you are not putting
servos in the tail...then move the wing forward to get the balance point
better. I'd say 3/8" would help. CG per the plans is like 46mm aft of tube
center...I ran mine about 35-40mm aft of tube center. With the elevator
servo up front the model was designed around servos in the tail and the CG
shift is of concern. My 3000 flight model (4yrs of flying 2000-2004) carried
3oz of lead in the stab tube. If you move the wing forward a bit it will
help the CG issue. If you are using a 2 stroke don't move the wing as its a
lighter nose already unless you are using a OS 160 and in that case go 1/2"
forward instead of the 3/8" for a DZ application...Depends on how heavy your
motor is and the servos in the tail. The Smaragd Z is a great flying model.
One of the best I have ever owned. And is still flying in the hands of
another. Well worn around the edges but still a good flying model.
