Hi Tom,

Thanks for the write-up. I really enjoyed the competition despite the wet
and windy conditions.

Like all pattern competitions part of the reason for going is to meet new
people and also re-acquaint with old but distant friends. ...Great to
finally meet you in person Tom.

Cheers,
Neil M.

Bob and all,

Our Nats were held two weeks ago. Despite the worst drought in history, we
actually have had some rain and bad weather. It is winter down here, so it
was reasonably cold.

The pattern part of the Nats were held in Wollongong, which is about 80 Km
south of Sydney ( most of you would know where Sydney is located)
As I previously mentioned it was a mud bath. The pits consisted of 'islands'
upon which each competitor had his set-up. Quite a sight.
We ran our Nats over three days. Saturday was manageable with some fairly
trying wind conditions, but the 'comfort factor' was extremely low due to
wind, cold and very wet and muddy feet. The planes were splattered with mud
as well, simply from people trying to 'hop' between the islands in the
pits!.
Sunday was called off, the wind was brutal and near on blew the club house
away. The rain continued.
Monday was day three and we managed to finish our finals rounds. Monday
wasn't the best of weather either, but we managed.

A small Nats this year with most states represented. I don't have the exact
numbers and cant remember most, but it was around 25-30? I think we had 8 or
9 in FAI. Victoria ( the state) had no representatives ( I assume it is Bill
you were looking for Bob?) Steve Coram from Western Australia wasn't there
either. They did have large distances to cover, but Neil Martin made it all
the way from Adelaide and John (Edward.... heheheh) Payne made it from the
tropical north with his new Bi-plane.
I must stress that the nationals in Aus are not really held in same
reverence as you boys in the US hold yours. There are I guess many reasons
why.

We have a much smaller population than you guys, but our scene isn't too bad
considering. Our top guys are comparable....I guess in a few weeks we shall
know from the results at the worlds. But we all know....that the results may
not always tell all.

I cannot remember our scores, I can however tell you some placing's in FAI.
The other classes of Expert, Advanced and Sportsman escape me right now.

FAI

1. Alfred Pye
2. David McFarlane
3. Peter Neuenhuizen
4. Tom Koenig ( that'd be me)
5. Neil Martin
6. John Payne
after that I'm not sure of the placing's
7. Tom Prosser
8. Chris Swain
etc

Anyway , like I said originally, not much to tell about our Nats, but on
another note, I think the 'Team' for the WC will do well. Our team consists
of,
Gavin Broadbent, Alfred Pye and Bill Bloodworth.
