Ohmigosh, no ... that's not what I meant: I would never have wanted to drag up an old unpleasant bit, like that.
It's much more funny when you can laugh at someone anonymous!
Nope, I'm talking about one morning when you, John Fuqua and I were judging the Sportsmen.
One of the pilots was doing a magnificent job of butchering the schedule, when he got to the last maneuver: the dreaded 3 Horizontal Rolls.
At just about roll 2, you leaned over and muttered, "here goes" and sure enough, at roll 2-1/2 the poor pilot's processor went BZZZTTTT, a wisp
of blue smoke poured out of one ear, and the elevator stick went all the way back. The Earth shook as it impacted just about 25 yards ahead of us.
We felt it in our feet.
That's not all ... about 1/2 hour later, we took the 250 foot walk to the water jug, and met my kid brother and Darlene Fredericks.
They were on the next line, another 250 feet down the runway with Verne Altamirano.
Over a cup of cold water, they asked if we had felt the ground shake, and did we know what it was!
Of course we told 'em!
Then there was the time you presented me with those knee pads. I still have them.

Yes, I'm here. What Dean referred to here was my infamous crash at the Nats. This was back in the days when some radios were having 3rd order IM problems. I was on the center line of three lines along the same runway. I was flying a JR Century 7 on channel 40. We started the day's flying with the guy two ahead of me crashing on channel 40. The next guy went up, also on channel 40, and he crashed too. I went up and the radio failed to respond as my airplane was vertical in a reverse Cuban 8 as I was setting up to enter the pattern. It went in absolutely vertical directly in front of the flightline to my left. I handed the pin to the guy behind me and said, "Let's see what kind of ba!!s you have". He wisely refused to fly. When I got to the other flightline to retrieve the wreckage, Dave Brown said to me, "Your engine never sounded better!" I guess Dean was there too.
