Which Engine Should I use ???

Scott,
I tried a OS Surpass 91 w/Pump in an 8-1/2 lb plane (VMar Avenger - Not recommended for Pattern) to compete in Sportsman in 2001. The engine could not pull the 45 degree up line for the 1/2 reverse cuban eight. I replaced it with the 91FX and had no problem using the stock muffler, but again the weight was 8-1/2 lbs. More weight than that and you will need more power.

Hello,
I use the OS91FX in a pattern plane and over the weekend Dennis Hunt from Zimpro had me do a test.. we ADDED lead to my 91 size viper and brought the dry weight up to 9.5 lbs and went and put a flight on it to see about the vertical ... And it went without a problem.. I'm running a APC 4 blade prop and 25% S&W fuel... also have added a perry pump to the set up last year runs great..

I am going to be putting together an Exceleron 90. I have 2 different engine options. First is an OS FX91, second is an OS FS91 Surpass w/pump. Both are NIB. I have flow previous planes with a different 91FRX. I am good with engines so I am not worried about any finicky engine issues with either one. I have 2 two meter planes right now. This plane is one that I want to be able to get home from work, grab it and go. The 2 meter planes take a little bit more preparation to get them going quickly. I want the plane to fly well with a good power curve. I know that the 91FX will want to be flown a little bit faster, but how much I don't know. Also would the FS91 II Surpass be enough to fly the plane well. I will most likely be flying the intermediate pattern next year, so it doesn't have to be oh my God outrageous performance. But I don't want tit to be a dog either.
If there is anybody with any time on this plane that could shed some light on the situation it would be greatly appreciated.
Dan
