Question on Bearing change out

Hi John,
Try this:
Leave the seals on the rear bearing. It works great. I haven't seen a loss of lube, yet.
The grease used may migrate, but if it does, then oil will get in, and the volatile bits of fuel will get out, the same way.
The front bearing doesn't need stainless, save your money.
Remove the rubber seals on that one, clean thoroughly, and install.
With the thrust washer removed, fill the front bearing with Mobil 1 and re-install the outer rubber seal.

Regards,

Subject: RE: Question on Bearing change out

Wayne,
I'm trying the same thing with some Boca bearings this season in an OS 160.
I bought S.S. front and rear bearings with seals (both sides). I left the
seals on thinking that the bearings will just run in the "lifetime
lubricant" (grease) that the bearings have from the factory. I'm hoping that
keeping the fuel out of the bearings might be a good thing. The only thing
I'm concerned about is the amount of drag from the grease. Fuel / oil is
much thinner so it offers less resistance at high RPM. If the motor doesn't
rev up as expected I'll just pull the seals off of the rear bearing, I
guess.
