Focus O ring pipe mount

Hi Bill,

I initially picked out several rings by TLAR (That Looks About Right) at a H/W store.
The one I settled on is Danco Company, Concordville PA 19331
Dimensions on package are: 15/16 x 13/16 x 1/16 O-RING STK NO 35746B
The ring appears to be 1/16 dia, which fits under the pipe pan screws OK.

In my case, I used tie wraps loosely around pipe, then slipped the ring half way under tie wrap,
and pulled the ring back through it's own loop. (That make sense?) Once rings are positioned,
tighten up the tie wrap. My set up uses four pipe pan screws, and one ring to each one.

I couldn't tell for sure from the photos Ed posted on RCU, be he apparently uses a much larger ring, and it
goes around pipe and pan screw.

I suspect the set up is not very critical, and would be ammenable to a number of securing systems (and twists as Ed suggests) to adjust tension. Overall tension on my set up is fairly light. I figured light was good to avoid pulling pipe pan screws out.

Later, Ron Lockhart

I used my LAR method (looks about right). I just rummaged through the parts bins at a couple of local auto parts stores and brought home a selection that appeared it might work. Go a little over size for diameter to allow you to go around the pipe and anchor either side, then you can adjust with an extra twist if it's not tight enough. For thickness, as thick as possible, just not so much as to make it difficult to capture under a screw & #6 washer. They range from about $.60 to about a buck each.

    Ed or Ron,

O'Rings; what is the part number and where did you buy them? I would think the O'Rings need to be high temp to deal with the heat from the pipe.

Looks like a good pipe mount.

    Bill

Here's the requested pics on RCU. Yeah, the bottom is starting to look a little ratty. Time for a repaint of that pipe tunnel. Anyway, nothing else holds the pipe, it's completely suspended from the O-Rings. My local Midas shop would be proud.

      Bob:

Should work fine. I've been using an O-ring mounting method since seeing this on Ron Lockhart and Rick Wallace's Focus's. It winds up being similar to what you have inasmuch as it allows plenty of give in all required axis, but definitely doesnt let things flop around. Light & cheap too.

Basically, the pipe is just captured with 2 - 3 O-rings slung between whatever you want to use to pull them taught along either side of the pipe in 2 - 3 separate locations along its length. On a Focus, it's real easy, since you just loop the O-ring under the screw heads that hold the pipe belly pan to the fuselage. The only other thing needed is something to prevent the pipe from slipping aft. I think Rick made some kind of collar around the inlet area for it to grab. Depends on the pipe location, you can also suspend the last one in the back by twisting around the exhaust exit and accomplish the same thing. I have pics of the Focus II if anyone is interested.

In typical "MacGyver"-ish fashion I *think* I've addressed this pipe mounting challenge on the Icepoint.

Your opinions - thoughts - should I even try this, or has someone already BTDT and learned something?

        Feedback welcomed, please!
