Ya, it's doable...  paint the canopy with liquid latex first, then sink it in the plaster.  No need for wax or mold release.   The layup will come right off.
You can get the latex made for molds from most any craft store.

  I didn't finish and wax the mold thoroughly enough;
  I broke it when I pulled my second or third canopy
  from it.
