Ed,
I'm using the same set up, 16.5x12w, Magnum DZ fuel.
Assuming you have checked everything else, plug's good, correct valve clearance. How many flights on the engine, have you look inside the header? Magnum have had some issue with their DZ fuel with carbon build up. Hatori corrugated header has a very small opening. As soon as carbon started to service, it will clog up the the header after about 25 to 30 flights, to the point you will lose rpm once engine is warmed. The heavy smoke trail is due to the low viscosity, heavy percentage oil content.
Try using the NMP header, it has a larger opening, you should be able to tell the difference. Also, Buzz is aware of the issue, I am getting some replacement fuel from him, and will be able to test it soon.
Hope this helps,
Adrian

Subject: dz questions
Hey everyone. Asking for a friend. Have a 140DZ. It has several issues we can't figure out, wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
16.5X12W prop, Magnum DZ fuel, Hatori header and pipe, OS F Plug. Only get 8300RPM at start but as the engine warms up it noticably drop 3-500 RPM. The idle is reliable as well as transition so don't think it is the pump. The high needle is 1.5 turns out. Leaning it only results in a drop in RPM. The problem is it goes RICH on vertical lines or vertical radii. The plane slows so much it is hard to fly well at that point. The smoke doubles after going vertical.
Any ideas??
Secondly, Joe wanted me to ask if the restrictor in the carb could make a big difference if taking it out??
Thanx in advance
