You can go to a slightly smaller prop to drop the load and increase RPMs by 200~300 and
that should make the needles less sensitive.....

Lance
I've tried 29.5", 32" and 33" from exhaust to the end of the pipe running the 15x11x4APC on 15%. 33" works well ( very linear throttle responce and minimal spooling on downlines) however the setting is still extreemly critical. I have the to make changes to both the midrange and the high speed needles to run the 15.5x12x4...I could not even get the engine past the midrange on the ground. Flying this prop was out of the question.
The tunnel does not allow me to go any longer. How can I de-sensitise the setting? Two plug head, more nitro ?

Colin,
there's a sweet spot that's about 3/4" long for where the pipe works best. You don't have to nail it perfect, but shorter than this and the midrange will get rich and longer it will lose some power. If the low end is not at a lean setting, you have the option to reduce the pump pressure in addition to lenghtening the pipe. Lenthening the pipe is the first option to try, but if you start losing power and still have the problme then you must lower the pump pressure. Since you are hunting for that "magic" 3/4", the trombone method I told you about is a quick and reliable way to find the sweet spot quickly. Before you discount a pump adjustment, remember you were using a Bolly, which may have different tuning characteristics, or it may not even be a tuned pipe.

Thanks. I'll try that set-up.

Colin,
My pipe length is 31" from the center of the glow plug to the end of the pipe (not including the stinger). Mine has about 3" between the header and inlet of the pipe. A good silicon coupler like blue Aerotrend works good.
Good luck,
Wayne

It sounds like I bought the right pipe. I'll look forward to the info on your pipe length.

Colin.

Coiln,
If the engine is running too rich in the mid range lengthen the pipe. This pipe needs a little longer setup then Lance originally posted. When I went to the AeroSLave pipe I installed it the same length as my previous pipe and it was slobbery rich in the mid range. I had to lengthen it about 1 1/2 inches. If it comes on the pipe real hard then it is way too short. This pipe when at the right length will be real smooth in transition and not come on the pipe hard but have a smooth constant power on top end.
When it is at the right length then richen the low needle as much as it will stand with out loading up and you downlines will be much, much better.
I will measure mine tonight and give you an exact length. I run a 17x12 APC and a 15.75x10 3blade by Lockhart and they both are real smooth on the power.

Help needed...tuned pipe problems!!
I've bought the AeroSlave CF pipe for my OS140RX turning an APC 15x11 4-blade. Aeroslave gave a starting length of 29.5 inches from the engine exhaust port to the end of the pipe. However, the engine runs extremely poorly at this length. In order to transition past the midrange the high end needle has to be very lean resulting in a lean high end. The power comes in with a bang and the engine accelerates in down lines. I think this is too short a pipe length although the header is full length.
Does anyone have any experience running these pipes on OS engines? What's the best starting point?
Colin.
