Thanks Keith,

I've never thought of a field box as brightwork (in the boat building
sense), and I have to admit that touching up the varnish as part of the
pre-season ritual does hold a certain appeal.  However, given the
(ab)use my old field box has gotten over the years I think I'll follow
Verne's lead and use the non-acrylic Minwax polyurethane.
