Jim,
          I don't do it by age.  (The chucking that is).

Li-ions will give you plenty of very good clues when to dump them.  Mine 
charge up and read about 8.48V unloaded with my C-volt meter. When they 
start showing readings like 8.3, 8.2 etc when fully charged, you will find 
that they give on el flight less and so on.

When I see that voltage drop I swap in a new one. Usually about two seasons 
on one battery with about 300 flights per season. (Approx)
