Actually, I don't think the resolution is limited on yours. Just keep moving 
the scale back. At some distance, the weight of the light source becomes a 
factor, but it is sort of self canceling since the objective is a set of 
equal numbers...

Then again, you could do the measurements with the control surface 
vertical...
