120 AC question

I am finally, after 3+ years, putting a 120 AC back together.  On the subject 
of the two rings on the crank shaft, what is the best way to compress them so 
I can slide the crank as far fwd as it will go?  They protrude quite a bit 
from the groove right now.  Your collective help is appreciated.
