O.S. pattern motors

John,
I am a newbie to pattern, and have no one nearby to lean on for advice. After viewing various options, I went with the OS 1.60, using the info from Bob Pastorello's site, www.rcaerobats.net. I am using the 1.60, with the replacement stainless sealed bearing from Boca, Mueller header, Perry pump, and a Greve pipe, swinging a 17x13 APC. This is about as dependable engine setup as I've ever seen for any airplane. It likes to be started upright the first time of the day, but after that, it starts easily by bumping it backwards against compression. I took some weight out by using a lightened backplate TruTurn spinner, and got a Grade 5 prop nut at Lowe's, and used the Dave Brown short spinner propwasher and adapter as a jamb nut, rather than the heavy OS/TruTurn components. The crankcase pressure nipple comes from the FI .160, and I just drilled thru the upper left rear backplate hole. I'm running 15% MACH 7 syn/castor fuel(Morgan fuels). I'm currently using an A5 OS plug, although I've also used the OS #8.

I will probably go with the Aeroslave CF pipe in the future as it is lighter and shorter than the Greve's pipe; it wasn't available when I started.

The ONLY issue I've found is that it sometimes likes to blow the seals out of the plugs, even after I added an additional head gasket. I beleive this was caused by using my gorilla starter when the engine was warm, and a minor hydro lock, as the plugs aren't blown out when I land. I haven't had a problem since I went to flipping it backwards after the first start of the day.

Hope this helps.
