All:
Last June I managed to find an OS 1.40RX through Tony Stillman. It was magic - really easy to handle, run, etc. I put the EFI rear bearing in and the Mintor two-plug head on before I started it for the first time. I had run about six gallons through it, and it started acting crazy.... of course I started acting crazy, too. Of course this was the week before the D4 Championship.....Thought sure it was the carb, so adjusted hi/lo to a fault.... so much I broke the low speed "cradle".... compression was almost gone, and it would start, but only at full throttle. When pulling the throttle back, it would eject a ton of fuel out of the venturi....
Completely tore it down, and at first, didn't see anything. Then, there it was..... two perfect grooves running up and down the piston, as seen through the exhaust port. Took out the piston and liner, and a C-clip had let go, making those grooves on both the piston and liner as it exited the motor... and of course my concern was how do parts like that exit? Pipe? Pump?......
I looked up all the parts on Tower, and they were in stock. For some reason, I decided to call Hobby Services and see what they thought .....I had only purchased the motor 3 1/2 months ago at this point......but, obviously I had changed the motor from the "mfg. specs".... A guy on the phone said, "send the motor in with a letter, and describe exactly what happened, including the fact that you are a pattern flyer, and that the engine had six gallons through it when this happened". His point on the phone was that nothing I did made that C-clip let go. Bottom line? Hobby Services replaced the piston, liner, carb, pump, both bearings, and shipped it back to me in three days. I really can't say enough about how impressed I am with the way they support their product. In addition, it meant something to them that I am involved in pattern. I think that's really great for a mfg. to recognize that we typically know what we're doing! Lots of info shows up about people being upset with someone..... thought you all might like to hear a story with a happy ending.
