these batteries are now so inexpensive I don't think it is worth
risking a plane costing hundreds or thousands.

New batteries can be purchased in custom sizes/configurations at many
places, such as www.cheapbatterypacks.com or www.battlepacks.com or
www.dynamoelectrics.com.  There are many new cells out there that will
outperform the cells in our receiver packs, and these cutom pack
makers build packs to the same quality standards as JR, Futaba, etc,
for a good price.  Just a thought...

Even the Li-Po packs are now becoming quite affordable.
