LiPos we aren't the only people to see issues

At least in our application the packaging isnt as rigid as some of the cell phone housings. 
Ive had a couple of my foamy lipo batteries swell, one while charging and one when I accidently shorted it out. Both packages trippled in size, both packages sizzled as they began to vent steam but didnt explode. If they had been in a housing like the cell phones use they would have at least broken the housing. 
 
It pays to watch them charge as others have mentioned.
