  MDF with 16 ga. u channels screwed to it is about as flat as anything I have found. I made a wing skin press out of two pieces and it is flat in any direction you put the straitedge on it. I was trying to put up a pic but it is too big.

    My slate is still on the table. I sheet all my wings and set up my planes on our pool table. It's an old bar table, probably weighs 1,000lbs assembled. I know you can't grab an end and move it. Most large cities have someone who sells top line pool tables, they will have excess slate.
