Surface

Around here the excess slate is bought for garden walks. It looks good, but it is very slick when wet.

Several years back I bought two pieces for some where around $50 each.

A perfectly flat surface is easier to work with but is not essential to produce straight wings. The final adjustment is the shimming of the shucks to get straight leading & trailing edges.

I hinged my slate on a workshop wall so I can slide a workbench under it when I need it.

My slate is still on the table. I sheet all my wings and set up my planes on our pool table. It's an old bar table, probably weighs 1,000lbs assembled. I know you can't grab an end and move it. Most large cities have someone who sells top line pool tables, they will have excess slate.
