Applying poly glue

I just wanted to follow up on this after a weekend of sheeting...

First, the roller works great!  I bought a couple of two pack 9" foam
rollers and cut them into thirds for the 3" cage (about $0.30 ea this way.)
I poured on the glue, spread it with a finely notched credit card, then
rolled it.  This really did a nice job of evenly distributing the glue up to
the edges without making a mess.

I did a little experiment with two identical sets of stabs.  On one I
applied the glue directly to the balsa.  On the second set, I sealed the
wood first with sanding sealer.  This added a little over 2 grams per sheet
assy.  The finished weight of these stabs was 5 grams heaver than the first.
>From this I concluded there's no advantage to sealing the wood when working
with poly (and I gotta believe the bond is better to bare balsa.)

Now I just have to figure out how you guys are making 9oz wing panels...!!

I have been doing a bunch of lay ups and I use the cheapest($1.50) 3"
foam roller I can get from Homie Depot.  I squeeze the glue on the wing
skin (about 1 oz.) and spread it out with a card till there is a nice
sheen to it and then take the roller and roll the whole skin out.  This
does two things. 1. It makes a very even coating of glue and picks up
excess glue in the heavy areas. 2. It makes the glue bubble up and will
raise the thickness of the glue some.  I think this helps the surface
adhesion some.

 Using this method saves about .5 oz per wing panel in glue.  I mist the
cores with an atomizer to make it damp to the touch and this sets off
the curing process an helps to make the glue foam a little.

As we transition into building season...

I was wondering, for those who roll polyurethane glue onto the wing
skins,
do you use some sort of rolling pan?  Seems like it could get real messy
and
hard to clean up!

On the other hand, dispensing directly to the skins then spreading with
the
roller would defeat the purpose...that being a thin even coat.

What kind of roller pad are you using?
