Fire Extinguishers and Xmitter springs

Lance:

Yes, they are a little different. The loops on the end of the springs need to be large enough so they can pivot. If the spring is snug against the plastic, it WILL break!

I mid-aired my airplane at the Georgia contest last weekend, so I am working on getting two more flying. With luck, I'll make BudCo.....

good point. I could suggest that the plastic hooks in the 9Z's gimbals are different from the 8U, but you would know that. I can only judge from my (smaller) sample size, so maybe they guys around me are just unlucky, or maybe the Texas heat softens the thermoplastic.
  See you at BudCo

    Lance:

I am sure the loops are the culprit. Otherwise, explain how I have been using them for 10 years in my 9Z tx's without any failures! These heavy springs are also used on JR single stick transmitters which are over 15 years old now and don't have breakage problems.

There may be issues with the plastic, but I can assure you that this is not the main problem.

      Tony,
I appreciate your position, but this is non reinforced thermoplastic and they are VERY tiny. A characteristic of this plastic is that under continual load it will "flow". If the load is just a bit larger than it can handle it will break over time.
If you still think that the spring loop is the culprit, then I should mention that you installed the springs in mine. And I installed the replacement hooks that I bought from you too. Interestingly, I still have the stiff springs and they haven't broken in over a year.

        Lance:

See my post about installing springs. It is not that the parts are not designed for this, as they will work just fine! The spring MUST be able to pivot easily, if not it WILL bend and break off the tip of the plastic retainer!

A comment about those new springs: I've now seen 3 transmitters break the plastic hook that holds the spring to the gimbal. On gimbal broke twice!! first time on the plastic hook and the second on the gimbal side. Those plastic parts are nit designed for the load of the heavy duty springs. My transmitter was one of these. I now believe that they are a nice idea but an impractical one.
Be warned and be ready to land with no spring center.

Since all this talk about Li-Poly's and such, I was wondering what type and size fire extinguisher you guys would recommend for your shop.

Second question. I recently replaced my gimbal springs with the Radio South heavy duty springs. The stock springs had grease on them. Anybody know what type grease you should use on your transmitter springs?

            Thanks,

            Bruce
