AA / Scale event combo

If memory serves me correctly, there was a pattern competition about ten or fifteen years ago in Belpre WV (D4) that was a combination of pattern and scale run as two seperate events. Pattern was the main event with scale run as kind of an undertone. The scale planes on display attracted spectator attention while we flew patttern. Later in the day the required scale manuevers were flown. I remember because I was flying pattern at the time with a ST bull ring 46 powered Mutchlers Cessna 177 that I also entered in scale. As I recall the contest was pretty successful. Greg Poppel and some other very friendly pattern flyers fixed my YS 45 at the competition and I was forever hooked!

I am also terribly against trying to have a freestyle, AA portion Sunday afternoon. Here is my reasoning.
1) Many contests we attend don't fly all 6 rounds as it is(this really upsets me even though I have driven a distance. Stay till 3 and finish the whole thing is my idea, but many differ.)
2) To add AA would only either extend the time people were there and still not finishing the pattern contests, or end up loosing more pattern contest for something new and different.
I do think an unknown would be challenging and fun as well as separate the by rote pilots vs those thinking pilots. This is a separate issue though.
Another point is the number of past IMAC pilots that all of a sudden are interested in Pattern. I know of at least 8 here in what was SC region for IMAC. As this trend possibly continues it is an idicator that we are doing the right things, if it continues.

Pattern Friends.
I think we should forget about spectators I agree(below)
Precision aerobatics! that is the goal of a pattern pilot and what our group is about.
Artistic Aerobatics
I am Not sure how Artistic Aerobatics would fit in with pattern, perhaps at the end of a pattern event with a pattern plane only? If not I would not consider it pattern event.
A pattern plane with smoke set up on the wing tips or ribbons sounds like fun. Something not flown in your pattern class to perform in a freestyle that does sound like fun.
IF we continue to keep the focus on improving pattern as we are doing our Aerobatic group will be even more challenging and rewarding. IF Artistic Aerobatics can do that for us that would be great.
Judges
I have always liked the idea of seeing judges scores held up at a contest as they record them. Would like to see the procedure at least once to see what happens......or do we want to see it ;-)
Nice to see so many interesting topics on the list.

I've advocated for a LONG time that it would be a hoot to SEE each judges
score AS he scored the flight. BIG LCD display on the back of the chair.
Think of the fun..the cat calls...the throwing of glasses to the blind
judge. LOL.
Serously though..it would make it more fun and maybe help spectators
understand what's happening.
Of course the cheers and boos might be distracting..lol

There you go Mark, let's kill the judges who don't see it our way
