Ed, actually you would be safer drilling a hole in the composite than the 
aluminum
 tubing. The nature of the composite doesn't lend itself to crack propagation 
readily as the nature of the aluminum would
. Still not a good idea to drill a hole in the middle of the tube but at the 
ends you are fine.
