Bolly and the WRAM Show

It's funny that every year I go to this or any other show I hear the same remark. "There's nothing really there for what I do". I hear this from Pattern folks, Glider guiders and the like. It is true that we often have to search the hobby industry for items that we want. (We are lucky to have a few suppliers who specialize in our sport. Radio South and Central Hobbies being two good examples, but they are not at very many, and in the case of Central, any shows).
In reality there is often more below the surface if you dig deep enough. I needed a 7/8" CF wing tube but did not expect to find one. During a conversation with Desert Aircraft about the DA50 that I was going to run on my Double Vision, I noticed some familiar packaging. Of course they had some Bolly props including the new 16 x 13W. What I also found was some FAI wide Bolly landing gear. I then said, "Bet you don't have a CF tube for a pattern wing and stab?". Lost that bet because they had a CF tube standing there in the corner. I had never thought of DA as a source of pattern stuff. The lesson there was to look closer during the tour of the show.
A second thing happened to me in a similar vein. The production Double Vision was on display at the planesplus booth run by Don and Carla Kanak. It was fun going over it and looking at the differences between the prototype and the final version. I was pleased to see a short belly pan that would allow a header and "quiet" can etc. The servo plate was pre-installed for the rudder servo etc. approx where I had guessed was going to be. Then I noticed some packaging that said RC City. A name from the past! Right there in front of me was a box of those excellent black servo-side-mount brackets that I used to always use. I had given up on finding a suitable replacement. Turns out that they have the molds and they make them. I grabbed quite few.
Lesson again was that there is stuff in unlikely places if only you look hard enough.

Regards,

Eric.
