John,
Spoilerons definitely are effective on a greasy airplane. One of my radios is a
Futaba and they refer to it as "Airbrake". I have used it on at least a dozen
airplanes and I set it up on "Switch C" which is a 3 position switch which I set
up to give me "Idle Down" in the mid position and and a combination of the two
in the extreme position. This allows me to fly the sequence at a little higher
idle so that I don't get flame-outs on stuff like spins and then get a really
low tick-over for approaches. If there's a fairly strong headwind on approach
the spoilerons are definitely not necessary, in fact they can be detrimental and
you can make a decision between high and low idle by toggling only the first
position on the switch. As far as control authority is conncerned, I have never
been able to discern any difference in feel. However, if you are employing the
ailerons as flaps, that may be a different story and I can't speak to that as I
don't go that route.
