Excelleron ST'd

Funny you should mention that, Randy ...

I am in the process of flight trimming the Excelleron for a review in Model Aviation. The whole goal of the review is to put together a cost-effective and non-intimidating package, to allow a Sport flyer to 1) feel what a groovy, well set-up airplane feels like; and 2) have a competitive mount for the first couple of seasons of Pattern practice and or competition. I am presently trimming the plane, and for the purposes of the review, that amounts to a baby course in trimming. The kit includes a soft mount, which the instructions warn may not be sufficient for a 120 four-stroke, but looked perfectly adequate for a 120 two-stroke, to me. As it turns out, it works great with a Magnum 120 two-stroke. Right now, I am working with the Magnum factory to get the engine just right: the carb was originally sized for higher RPM, and the fuel draw was not right. The factory have been incredibly cooperative, and if the engine with revised carb runs like it does with the OS7M (yes the OS FSR 60 carb) then we have a $150 solution that allowed me to fly the FAI schedules with plenty of horsepower, just yesterday.

A good running 120 two-stroke is a great solution for the Excelleron, turning a 15-10 APC, in the mid eights, with the stock muffler. Short of convincing a newbie to put the right glow-plug in the engine, we can eliminate the engine related learning curve. Mine is about 8-3/4 lbs. Oh yeah, all this on 10% fuel. I'm sure that a Tiger 23 would be a good choice, too. The 31 ounce Magnum did not make the plane too nose-heavy.

I looked at the Jett .90, 1.00 and 1.20. They look real nice; but seem somewhat pricey. Maybe for my next one. As I will be flying my Excelleron90 at pattern primers, I am trying to go lower cost options. Ordered a Tiger Shark 120 which I plan on using with the stock muffler. Should be low enough cost that the average flyer could afford to try pattern.

How about a Jett or Nelson .90? I am really impressed with the Jett but have never seen one. The web site description is magnificent.

Any more about the ST2300. Looked at RC Universe, but how does it fly? Any problems with the CG.

My OS91FX is back to a stock carb but have gone with the OS update for the rear needle valve assembly. It is the rear needle vavle assembly for the 65LA. Mounted it on the fire wall. Put the Utlra thrust muffle on it. Seems to have picked at lot of RPMs. You open the needle valve a whole turn when changing from the stock to the ultra thurst muffler. Only test runs on the apartment patio and man it is really LOUD. May be too load to use in pattern.

Anyway, thinking of a belated Christmas gift to myself. So what would be better on an Excelleron90 - Tiger Shark 120, Magnum 120AR, thunder tiger 120, Webra 120, or Super Tigre 2300?

Here's the thread on RCU with my latest efforts. Have the ST2300 installed, broken in, and it is wonderful!! Can't wait to fly her. It all fit as if it was meant to be there!!! Obviously, this is truly outstanding power for this airframe.
