Newbie with a bad experience at patternKeith you nailed it right on the head. As a builder for many years I can tell you first hand that to build a competitive pattern plane from a kit (cores and a glass fuse) requires one to have expert building skills and the proper tools. Not taking sides, when I read Mike's post it's clear that he had no idea what was required to build a cores and glass fuse type of kit. Epoxy and microballons to fill pinholes and the seam plus the cores didn't have the cut outs gives it away. I can understand the cracked fuse part but to blame a kit maker for ones lack of understanding and or skills required to complete a cores and fuse type kit is wrong. Just my 2 cents.

Mike, it's unfortunate that you've had a bad experience. Truth is that building your first pattern plane requires learning a lot of new techniques if your not familiar with sheeting foam wings and working with fiberglass and/or carbon fiber. I was in this situation and the AeroSlave guys were extremely helpful to me to the point of having me come by and showing me exactly how to set the stab and even helping me do painting, etc. Obviously it's helpful to be in close proximity, but I know they exchange extensive emails with many people out of town to help them through the process.

Our choices in pattern are improving, but we still have fairly limited options when it comes to high quality composite kits. I'm appreciative to anyone that dedicates their time to creating these high tech kits locally to allow us to buy domestic high quality kits that don't come from France and cost $500-$600 rather than $1500-$2000. Remember, these guys don't do this for a living, this is a passion. I for one hope they keep it up and appreciate all of their help!

Mike, I hope things work out for you and hopefully I'll see you at the Waco contest to start out the 2005 season. If I can help you in any way please let me know.

Let me tell you a short story from a newbie I flew for appox 10yrs till 1978 when I retired. Went to my first pattern contest in 2003 and said that's what I want to do seen all those pretty birds and had to have one asked around and was told someone said he sells kits. He lives in middle of Texas. all right asked if he had any for sell no but can get me a kit in a couple months could hardly wait e-mailed him told me how much $ 495.00 wing Fuse. And stab and a set of instruction. Well the fuselage was cracked in two place the wings cores had no holes cut in them as I said no nothing just cores now I'm lost so I email him and he says send them back at my cost another $45.00 and still no idea how to build this plane this guy Tells me about A person in Nederland TX that fly's pattern maybe he cane help I call him and Buddy Brammer, Larry Mercer Ray Rhodes took me under there wing now ever Friday I was going back and forth trying to get my fist patter plane in the air had the fuselage ready to fill in all the holes left from the molds I start epoxy and micro balloons looking good till I start sanding them smooth and low and be hold all the stuff I just put on fell off now I'm in to $750 and still no were near being done well guess what the fuselage is setting on my shelf and still no pattern plane. I flew a U CAN DO in my first contest and second went Nederland TX and third to Hot springs and flew over there won as I was the only sportsman flying ever one was encouraging but still no patter plane tried to talk to the people that sold me MY fist plane and was told in so many words I didn't do ii right now I have a contest in Lake Charles La so guess what I flew the U CAN DO in 25 mph and didn't win but had a lot of fun Thanks to Buddy, Ray, and Larry,Ed , Ned

Now I have a Focus 11and have spent appox 2500.00 and still haven't flown a patter plane I see this guys name all the time on this web site and they have all the ans . But he had no TIME for a newbie except my money and you all want to know why your membership is dropping as one of the guys said take someone under your wing its amazing what will come out maybe a world Champaign One more thing You all that fly Masters and up some times it helps to remember where you all started some time you can't see the ground for all the trees. Its not fun when you're the only one flying.

I will fly pattern and will win but no help from the people from Dallas Fort worth area
