VP30 mounting, ARIA mount effcet on remote needle

Hi Gang,
Back in '85/'86 I mounted a Perry in the backplate of an OPS 60 with a very short length of the stiff tygon tubing and simply filled the gap between the backplate and pump casing with RTV silicone. Of course I used the fancy high-temp automotive stuff. It worked perfectly, for about one-hundred flights, but was ultimately replaced with a rear-intake version of the same engine, which did not require a pump.

Both of my installations are well-documented pictorially on my website.  I have the pumps mounted on the firewall, to the side, and toward the bottom of the firewall.  Ignored the vent hole orientation, and the suppy is fine.  There are NO problems with this setup.  Both of my pumps are mounted differently; one horizontal, one vertical, but they are both roughly on the centerline of the carb.
    Installing in the backplate would work, too, if there was an adapter to make it fit.  THe pump is quite a lot smaller than the 1.60 backplate, so I decided not to fiddle with that.
    Sorry the regulator setups didn't work.

Just wondering how important it is to have the vent hole in the plastic housing pointing down on the VP30?  I assume it is to minmize the chances of collecting dirt.  Any other reason for it?  This is all leading somewhere...
 
Another question: I'm using an ARIA mount with an OS 1.60.  I've test run it with no pump, no regulator and with a Cline regulator and with an Iron Bay regulator.  The first thing I noticed is that no matter what, you can not get smooth fuel flow from the remote needle valve since it shakes around so much on the mount.  No problem when it's removed from the rear bracket.  I've concluded that it's better to avoid the demand regulator approach with this engine, since it probably has to be placed in between the needle and the carb to make it work well - there is no easy way to do that besides letting it hang off the fuel lines.
 
So I ordered the VP30.  This whole mess is going into a Focus II and it also seems a bit awkward to mount the VP30 to anything that will allow it to be anywhere in the vicinity of the carb. This is worsened by the requirement to point the vent downwards. It would appear that the best thing is to move both the pump and needle valve as close and as level to the carb as possible.  So far, all I can see as a way to do this is to mount it all to the cowl (again).  Yuch.  Any other thoughts on this? Can I safely put it as far back as the side of the engine box and expect it to work well?
