YS 1.40 Sport

The Original FZ and the sport are essentially the same motor. The Sport has the L carb on it which gives a little boost in performance over the original FZ. Actually the Sport is an FZ 2....And by the way the difference in the 140L (limited edition) and the FZ was the carb and the crank shaft ring.

So the difference in the 140L and the 140FZ-Sport is the crank shaft ring.

Now in the time since the 140FZ came out in 96-97' there have been many changes to these 140's gas ported pistons, piston designs, maybe needle valve changes, throttle barrel changes and so on but these really are not different generation changes....You can still use a 140 piston in a 140FZ, L, Sport or DZ....In fact the new piston design from the DZ I believe is being used in the 140FZ-Sport. So to say you need an FZ piston and not the L piston...These parts are interchangeable...So use the DZ piston its the newer one.

Parts are essentially interchangeable....and the performance difference is minor. The L had about 300rpm over the FZ and the Sport is about in the middle of the FZ and L.

As for power and performance I will say this...the top end power of an FZ-Sport or 140L is not equal to the 140 2 strokes. Where as I feel the 140DZ's power is on equal footing. Others will argue this but If prop and setup right the 140DZ will haul the same model just as well top end as a 140RX. I experienced it and flew a 140EFI and RX's and the DZ in the same Smaragd and chose the performance of the DZ. I don't want to argue this point with anyone if you believe different that's fine...Lets go compete and see where the chips fall. It doesn't matter how your model gets up the line the fact that it does get up the line is what is important. My contention is the 4 strokes make it easier for me to fly the sequences, and this is also proven by the top F3A pilots in the country and the world. Out of the top pilots at the NATS 12th place was the 1st 2 stroke, and then the Electric Jason flew. It still comes down to skills, as Jason showed us all at the NATS with his Electric. But 10 out of the top 12 is a pretty bold statement...And 10 out of the top 11 being 4 stroke is another good statement on the performance of the motors.

The question at hand is the 140Sport compared to the 140 2 strokes...It will be down on power on the top end...However it is more than enough power to do what is needed in the model even at 11lbs...Less weight and the motor will give even better performance. I ran a 140L in a ZN Line Fashion back in 2000 and that model was a little on the heavy side (10.8lbs at one time)....and I had plenty of power for the F3A sequences of the time which are very comparable to what we have today....Humpty bump with positive snap up and 4pt roll down was in the finals sequence back then....And I had enough power even at 6000ft in Denver to fly it. The most demanding power sequences in today's Prelim or finals sequences are 1 positive snaps up....on humpty bumps...

I feel the 140Sport has great potential as a pattern motor. A bunch of people got the idea that they should convert their FZ's to L's and I think that was foolish. The power gain was minimal and you took a smooth easy to operate motor and turned into a more compressed, more shake-rattle-n-roll more and it cost you about 75-150 bucks depending on parts....The 140FZ was one of the best motors ever released and it was an easy one to operate. This is why they called it the FZ 2 a SPORT even the sport guys would love the motor....I would not hesitate to run a 140 FZ-sport in a 10lb to 10.5lb model. Especially in AMA Masters Class and below. The top dog is of course the 140DZ and then later this year the 160DZ but the Sport is every bit as capable if you run it right.....You just have to learn to use what is available...

I've got a question along this same line. What's the difference between the 140 Sport and the older, but still a goodie, 140 FZ?
As they say in the old commercial, "Thanks for your support."
