How thick is a mil.?

As a lifer in the paint industry and having to write specs, etc, for how to paint, as well as inspect and test the finished product, 1 mil is .001 inch, one thousand of an inch in our world.

      Depends on who you are talking to.  An artillery gunner would say a mil is a thousandth of a radian.  I think at one time a tenth of a penny or a thousandth of a dollar was also called a mil.  So the real answer is "a thousandth of something".
