OS Pipe Settings

I know this may have been covered
with a Mac’s 1092 pipe, what is the
starting point with an OS 1.60?  Ed’s site has some references to 18 ½”
to the first reflector ring in the pipe.  That seems quite short

What’s the experience out there?
            APC 17 x 13N, looking for mid 8’s
