Firewall for Hyde Mount

Hi Mike, Thanks for the help. Did you place dowels or wood inserts for the engine mount bolts inside the carbon nomex to prevent it from crushing? Reeves.

Reeves, correct me if I am wrong. The way I understand it, you are applying carbon fiber to both sides of 1/4 inch balsa to form your firewall. If that is correct, I would say that would be more than sufficient. I do not have any experience with that exact set-up, but I use 1/8 inch honeycomb carbon fiber sheet for my firewalls, and using the same engine mount you are that supports an O.S. 140 RX. I am building a new plane with the same set-up with a 3M 170, and I am very confident that it will be plenty strong enough. The Hyde mount eliminates enough of the vibration from the firewall, that you would be surprised what you would be able to get away with. You may want to add a vertical piece of 1/2 inch aluminum angle stock to the back side of the firewall for the two bolts that support the nose ring support, to help prevent any flexing that may occur in the firewall. I do not use that method on my plane, but that was a suggestion to me from Merle Hyde when mounting that mount on a thin firewall. The carbon fiber is so strong, I do not feel it is necessary, but you may feel it is.

Just my two cents, hope this helps,

  Mike Darr

Hi, I plan to install a Hyde ARI (A) mount in a new Synergy I am building. This is the mount with the nose ring incorporated on an aluminum yoke. I was going to use carbon fiber end grain balsa composite 1/4" thick for the firewall material. Is this material stiff enough? Anyone else using this setup with success? Thanks, Reeves in Alaska.
