How to LOCK drive washer & retainer on YS 140L?

  My sincere thank  to those who helped me (Bob ?? don't know the last name
but with WHIP23 at aol.com, Bob Kane, Bill Carpenter, Robert Gainey, Del Rykert
and others who I forgot to add here).

  The retainer touches the inner race of the front bearing.  I thought it
shouldn't touch, so I spent a few hours thinking how to make it not to
touch. (total dumb action)
  I measured everything including the case depth etc with the old front
bearing on crankshaft with retainer to find how deep the bearing has to go
in the crankcase.  Having a Caliper helped here.

  The front bearing is fully in.  Heating up in the oven, pushing in, slight
tap etc.
  Prop turns fine, but the driver washer is still not locking.

  How tight should does the prop should be on to lock the drive washer.
  I did as much as I could to lock it up (even tried to wet sand the
retainer a little bit), but still does not lock.

  Replace the retainer? (it is still on order with my new updated cam
followers with Piston update although I am not sure if Richard Verano got my
fax before returning the piston).

  I am not sure if I can start the engine without the drive washer locked in
place.
  I did not run the engine when I purchased.  I bought it to repair and
update first before running.
  Without the cam followers update it's going to eat the cam gear sooner or
later.

    The retainer has to go all the way to the bearing . It pushes the inner
race against the step on the crankshaft . This is what locates the
crankshaft in its proper place. If it does not go all the way to the bearing
, the crank could float fore and aft causing damage that new bearings alone
won't fix.

    If everything is in its proper place , the retainer should lock down on
the crankshaft against the bearing inner race and the crank should spin
freely . You may have more than one problem. I would suggest that you seek
the aid of a local engine guru and let him look at what you have .

    Have you run this engine before tearing it down , or did you purchase it
from someone who said it needed repairs before running it ?  Gotta ask !
