The retainer has to go all the way to the bearing . It pushes the inner race
against the step on the crankshaft . This is what locates the crankshaft in
its proper place. If it does not go all the way to the bearing , the crank could
float fore and aft causing damage that new bearings alone won't fix.
If everything is in its proper place , the retainer should lock down on the
crankshaft against the bearing inner race and the crank should spin freely .
You may have more than one problem. I would suggest that you seek the aid of a
local engine guru and let him look at what you have .
Have you run this engine before tearing it down , or did you purchase it from
someone who said it needed repairs before running it ? Gotta ask !
