Whoops, it was the 170's second contest, the Phase One V.3s first contest

- Given the obviously "light" nature of the 3M line, I wonder just how-big
the displacement would be if they decided to add 4.0 oz of material and made
the weight of it equal to the OS 160? I doubt a comparison would be equal
then <VBG>
My 170 flew its first contest this weekend, flawlessly. I wish I could say
the same for my fingers.

Just before I was "forced" to attend a sales training meeting in
Florida,(Sunday flight and all that ), I was able to fly a gallon through
the Temptation and get feel for the OS 1.60's Vs the Mintor 1.70. Currently
the OS is producing 8,100 rpm on a 17 x 13 APC with 15/16 Powermaster. The
Mintor is coming into its own and is currently spinning a 17 x 12, so the
comparison is not quite equal.
CLOSE is the word however. The OS has a disadvantage in that it is a side
exhaust (OS must be asleep on this one - WEBRA has one coming..) apart from
the ugly header side hole in the Temptation the rest is beautiful.
Back to the comparison. Taking all the above into account I think that it is
fair to say that you have an equal and open choice. The Mintor is living up
to it's claims. It has rear exhaust, and is ~ 4 oz lighter.
I am not exaggerating when I say I am torn as to which plane to fly.
Hydeout/Mintor or Temptation/OS 1.60FI.
Back to meeting..
Eric.

Great to see your experience Eric. I get nearly identical results on mine,
using 17 x 12 apc, two OSA5 plugs, Cool Power 15%, Mintor carbon fiber pipe.
I cut the header 1.0" short, and get just a bit more rpm set for launch.

the forecast was rain and windy the reality was a brief sprinkle and a
gentle east wind.. One long lunch later, seven serious flights and I shall
claim that the 3M 1.70 Mintor is broken in.
I switched to 15/16 and flew twice with the 16" prop. Then with the 17 x 12
APC. The engine ran a whole tank at full rpm on the ground at a very steady
8,010 rpm. and head temp around 90-100F.
The we beastie has a bit of poke to say the least. On verticals you could
use full power but you are advised to back-off on the 45 degree lines for
fear of overshooting your destination. The diamond loop size is your choice
with this prop and motor. Dare I say DZ'esque! of OS'esque!
Now we have OS 1.40's (EFI and RX's), YS 1.40's Webra 1.45's, OS 1.60's (FX
and FI), Soon to come WEBRA 1.60's, Mintor 1.40's and 1.70's etc all to
chose from depending upon taste, service needs and plane weights... Isn't
great to have all of these choices, of course unless you are indecisive!!!!!
Regards,
Eric.
