Pot-less servos

Steppers are available in a wide range. There are small ones in disk drives
and printers. The problem is that if there is no closed loop feedback to
assure that the commanded movement really happened, it could easily adopt a
new center position in a servo. Currently optics seem to provide the most
popular feed back in computer applications.
