And I worded "ball bearings" carefully to avoid other implications! Couldn't 
agree more regarding the loads generated by "pinging." The noise one hears is 
the vibration of the engine parts smacked by the pressure wave from the 
detonation. Most crank / rod / piston breakage is detonation related, and as you 
point out, bearing failure. Bushing bearings do work well in automotive engines. 
Maybe a pressure oil feed, dry sump system.....
