Thanks, Eric. You probably don't remember, but you showed me a 2000mah Li-ion pack from Bern Furgang at the Nats last year. I'm running one in my Smaragd this year and love it. So now I have power to spare in my starter and plane. Just contemplating different options for my Tx pack.

Thanks,

vk

  Verne,
FYI - I have been using a Li-ion from Bern Furgang. It has it's own wall charger. It charges up to 12.4V and holds its charge for months. It can run a PCM TX for four flight sessions of five-six flights. Not really any need for field charging. It is a pair of three cell 4V Li-ions.

The 2000 NiMH pack is a good TX choice. My 1830 mAh's can fast charge in the van I get twice the time I used to get in my 1100 Nicads. I carry a spare TX pack and it holds a good charge for months between a boost charge. No memory issues either. All in all a good situation.

  Regards,

  Eric.

  Thanks Earl,
That's a little comforting. I don't know a lot about batteries except that up to now, I've always heard that heat and rechargeable batteries are a bad mix. I've been hearing from other guys as well that NiMH batteries heat up a bit when charging and that it's normal. However, I'd be surprised if they're supposed to get as warm as they were on my Alpha 4. Other than figuring out the best way to charge it at a reasonable price, I'm very happy with the 3000mah NiMH pack I got from Bern Furgang for my Kavan starter. I'm now contemplating a 2000 mah pack for my 9Z from Bern but I want to get the charging situation cleared up first.

Another point concerning NiMH charge temps is that, unlike NiCad, NiMH cells exotherm from charge onset (NiCads only exo after "peak").
