Bill,
I had a blast unofficially scoring many of the flyers participating at the Nats. I
wanted to find out if my judgement skills were remotely correspondent with the actual
out- come. It quickly became apparent that a strong correlation would be unattainable
as it was impossible to score two different flyers that were up at the same time.
However, undaunted, I decided that my scores would approximate the average consistancy
of any given flyer, flight to flight.
I would take my raw numbers, at the end of the day, and tabulate the K-Factors (I
brought along a calculator) and get a rough idea of where I had the scored individuals
placed. You would be amazed at how close the results were. As I recall, I think I had
1st and 2nd reversed and I think I had Trent one place higher than the final result
but everything else was a lock.
I'm sure that there were many that thought I was some kind of a flake, but it was a
very rewarding experience for me and besides studying the best flyers in the country
is a wonderful way to learn to improve your own personal skills.
The Snaps were a special study in technique for me as there seems to be a wide
variation in execution and presentation.I know that there is supposed to be no
downgrade for deviation from the flight-line, but there were several individuals who
demonstrated the ability to snap with a substantial "break" and a beautiful clean
return to the flight-path dead on the money. Harrison and Hebert were outstanding
examples of this ability. Goes to smoothness and precision. The reason I was so
impressed was because I can't do it and I'm envious as all get out!
As far as the Supervisor thing goes, I could have used one on my hat so that my nose
wouldn't have gotten so burnt.
