Is there a New England chapter of the SPA?

Sorry if I misspoke and thanks for bringing me up to speed - so to speak!

I had many suggestions about bringing scale aerobatics planes into pattern contests but none about SPA. The size and noise and weight of IMAC competition planes just never made that a reality. I personally think we (SPA and NSRCA) are more related and have much closer genetics. One reason why I covered SPA in my MA column. (Haven't heard from them lately - guess I will now....) ;-)

It is my belief that if you talk something through long enough an answer forms from the heat.

The popular engine in SPA is the OS 91. It is quiet enough. We just had the Hotlanta SPA contest last weekend and there probably was 2-3, 2 stroke engines with regular mufflers. There are no tuned pipes and no AC engines and no retracts allowed. Noise isn't a problem with SPA.

After several long "fireside chats" a similar non-turnaround thought pattern came up about over 55's having a non-turnaround class.

Complex center maneuvers (e.g. easier to see) for the old guys but non-scored turnarounds. Keep it to say, 10 maneuvers. Would make judging a lot easier. Could retain more pattern pilots as they age!? (Even CD's :-))

Lest we not forget our biggest challenge is numbers of participants. As a % of RC pilots we are a decimal point! That scares me. Not enough youth and then we have the "silverbacks" giving up because the routines stretch their vision on turnaround maneuvers.

If it was not for the noise problem of the older designs I'd also run SPA at a 401-406 pattern event.

      Regards,

      Eric.
