HMMM...   check header attachment at the engine exhaust.   I had a similar problem with my S.T. and it had a dark exhaust but then engine is still fine after 300+flights.  I believe mine was from where the side exhaust header touched the exhaust flange even though it was tight.

    Make sure you dont have anything in your pipe system that is loose or rubbing.  Black is a sign of aluinimun wearing somewhere.  What fuel are you running?

      I've just completed test flying my new Focus, and the plane is great.  Wonder if I should be concerned about how dark the exhaust residue is....... first few flights, almost black.  Purchased used, so not completely sure of it's history.  Runs fine, but......???
