Hydeaway Maiden Flight

Dave's HydeAway At 10LB 3OZ appeared to have enough vertical to go out of site with authority. 15/18 S&W fuel, mac header, APC 3 blade 15.75x11 and ES 2CS90 pipe. Dave has a bladder tank that holds 18oz of fuel. The engine is brand new, one ground run and then the 3 flights last night. After each flight we had to lean the high speed at bit as the AAC piston/liner assembly got better acquainted. A very impressive combo.

  How long will it go vertical? If it is 10.5 dry and say 11.5 wet , What prop and header , pipe combo would do that .
    I have not seen a 11.5 lb plane go vertical very long on a YS -L ,

    At 10.5lb the Hydeaway will go vertical with a YS 1.40L or OS 1.40 RX. - enjoy.

    I think you are refering to the HydeOut. To the best of my knowledge the HydeAway was offered 2 ways, semi ARC with sheeting on flying surfaces done and a composite fuse by ZN line. The second version was all wood built up from Japan, very light and high quality. I knew of one here on the east coast that blew apart in flight. The HydeOut is substantially smaller than the HydeAway.
    I've spent many hours weighing componets, hardware and taking weights during construction while building my soon to be finished EMC2. I also recorded some of this information on Dave's HydeAway. I hope to share this information as an article in the KFactor later this year. Like the tachs that have a built in 500 rpm head start, there seems to be an abundance of scales that start at minus numbers or defy gravity.

      Sorry, not knocking the build quality here at all.  However, there are two types of kits, the ones that are fairly well finished, i.e. wings skinned etc, and the base kits where you simply get the foam cores, carbon fiber wing tubes, formers etc.i.e no wood apart from gear mounting plate. Which one was yours?

        I would like to see one that is at 9.5lbs on a scale in person. This kit was built as lite as I could not only that but have a OS140rx that has shed 2oz through mod's The only thing that ads some extra weight is I used a bladder tank.

          Sounds like it's a great flying plane, but I was a little surprised at the weight.  9.5lbs seems to be the norm for this one.  Still I personally like them a bit heavy, better in wind.

                I just got back from putting the maiden flight on my Hydeaway.I would like to thank Ed Miller for driving the hour and a half to stand by my side during this event. He is also the person who did the beautiful paint job. I would also like to thank Lance Robins for the graphics and I would especially like to thank Troy Newman for all the help and advice during the building process.
                With a click here and a twik there the plane flew great! Dry weight, ready to fly, 10 lbs 3.2 oz's. \
