I know about Cleveland. I spent 3 weeks in Highland Heights in December for
company training and didn't see blue skies until I past the Tenn-Ga. border
on the way home.

I was going to make a comment about trying skis, but I thought I'd let it
pass.

A gentleman here in Cleveland had a modified Kaos with retractable skis that
fit neatly and became part of the wing (tail dragger).  More dedication for
winter flying than I'm suited for.

Thank goodness for indoor paintbooths...it's 11 deg here.

I've heard the pavement in Pensacola is exceptionally rough, but one set of
tires in one contest? Wow! Like to try it sometime. Actually, as I watch the
snow coming down as I write this, right now would be just peachy......

    I do all those things you suggest, however the spindly struts on my
prophecy,
  sway and lean and flex so bad that the wheels don't last long. Every time
I go to the contest at Pensacola Fla. I wear out a set of tires. It's just
the nature of the pavement composition. I also fly a Focus and that gear is
stiffer and doesn't flex as bad and the tires wear quickly on it also. The
thing that happened to the Focus tires was the rims warped and came apart.
I can fly on grass  no problem with the Foamies. I burned 34 gal. of fuel
last year and went through 2 sets of tires on both planes.

    You'll get a lot more life with foam tires on grass and especially
pavement if you let the plane roll out after landing before turning. Toe-in
is tough on tires as well and isn't necessary on a pattern plane. Any time
you're dragging a foam tire, whether by skidding it in a turn or constant
skidding with toe-in, it's like rubbing a sponge across 30-grit sandpaper.
The treaded 3" Dave Brown's I flew all last summer on both grass and
pavement still have good tread showing after about 20 gallons of fuel worth
of flying.

       I think you can get the wheels from Piedmont.  However my set is now
the Dave Brown wheels. I don't expect them to last long either.

        Hey ya'll,

        I am looking for some 3" wheels and was wondering what the lightest
ones where.  Most of my flying is off of grass and they are going to be
surrounded by wheel pants.  So looks are not important.

        I know people talk about Dave Brown and Sullivan skylite, but I have
no idea on the weight of these wheels. The factory ones that came with my
Focus are very light, but I don't think you can get them separately.  Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
